Statement by Colonel James Bashall OBE QCVS, Chief of Staff of Multi-National Division (SE)
25 June 2004

Return of RN Training Team personnel from Iraq

We are delighted to confirm that all eight members of the Royal Naval Training Team based in southern Iraq, who were detained by the Iranian authorities on 21 June 2004, are now back with British forces in Iraq.

They are fit and well, and in good heart.

They have been taken to the Shaibah Logistics base near Basrah, where they will receive a medical check-up and allowed some time to rest and adjust before being debriefed to establish the full series of events since they left Umm Qasr on Monday.

It is hoped that they will return to their duties on the water soon.

They have undergone a stressful experience, and we ask that you respect their privacy and that of their families.

This incident has not detracted from the resolve of the Multi-National Forces to continue to conduct operations in partnership with the Iraqi Security Forces, and in support of the Iraqi Government, in order to bring security and stability to Iraq.
